Self-storage can be a lifesaver for seasonal decorations, down-sizing or seldom-used valuables, but there are potential risks storing items in a highly visited facility. Here are some tips for keeping your possessions safe while they’re stored away.
Choose a facility that values security
Before you sign a contract, talk to the facility about their own security measures. How do they prevent people from accessing the grounds of their facility? Where are the cameras placed? Is there a guard on site? The more steps they take to keep everything secure, the better.
Purchase a quality lock
Many people opt for a facility provided lock. Instead, shop for the highest possible gauge that will fit the door and is difficult for someone to pick. The harder it is to get past, the less likely it is that a thief will target your storage unit.
Keep items covered
Every time you open your unit, you are showing those around you what you have stored inside. This can invite interest and encourage theft. To prevent this, keep everything covered, especially items of value.
Stack strategically
In general, thieves want to get in and out as fast as possible. Knowing this, place the most valuable items at the back of the unit, underneath other unwieldy boxes or behind miscellaneous clutter. If possible, conceal them in boxes and trunks. Chances are thieves will take items they can access easily rather than search through everything.
Take out an insurance policy
Your homeowner’s policy may not cover items stored off site, so you might need a renter’s policy. Even if the storage facility has its own insurance coverage, it is best to take one out yourself if you are storing anything important. If the items are mostly without significant value but you are simply not ready to part with them, it may be okay to forgo the coverage.
