Many of us are familiar with spring cleaning—dusting, vacuuming and organizing—but prepping your house for spring should go beyond making the house look nice. Here are some things to put on your list.
The gutters
You might’ve cleaned your gutters in the fall in preparation for winter, but it’s time to clean them again. Although they tend to collect less debris over winter, you can still find some items hiding in there. It’s best to get them cleared out now so they don’t become clogged in spring or summer.
Outlets and switch plates
We’re in contact with outlets and switch plates frequently but rarely clean them. This spring, take the time to remove them from the walls and properly disinfect them. Allow them to thoroughly dry before placing them back on the walls.
Filters
Now is the perfect time to clean or replace filters. Depending on the setup of your home, you may have many filters to clean. Water, range hood and air vent filters are all common culprits. In most cases, these should be cleaned or changed every three months.
Faucets and shower heads
Even if your water supply is high quality, there is probably some buildup on your faucets and showerheads. If this is the case, take a little time to get the water flowing better once more.
Tie a bag filled with vinegar around each faucet or showerhead and let it sit for an hour with the vinegar covering the opening. Rinse with warm water and everything should work like new.
Washer and dryer
Cleaning the washer and dryer will remove buildup and smells within the machines and prevent the risk of fire from the dryer. While there are DIY guides for cleaning these appliances, it’s not an easy task for a beginner. Instead, contact a professional to get them cleaned and serviced.
Outdoor spaces
You can now get to work outside and prepare everything ready for spring growth. Remove any debris and dead plants, prep the ground for new items and check your hoses and sprinkler systems. Also check that any outdoor furniture is in good shape.
