If you have a home art display, it’s in your best interest to keep it well-preserved. Here are some easy ways to protect your displays.
Utilize the correct hardware for hanging wall art
A standard picture hanger will hold up a lightweight canvas, but it will quickly give way to a large, ornate mirror. When purchasing hardware, check to see how much weight it is designed to handle. Some pieces of art may need to be hung from multiple spots to disperse the weight. Also, keep in mind the hanger on the art itself may be insufficient.
Anchor hardware into wall studs
Wall studs are the pieces of wood that make up the frame of your home and are much more stable than drywall alone. It is advisable that all artwork of any weight be placed on hardware anchored to a stud.
Keep away from windows and doors
It might look nice, but anything that could be ruined by rain is not suitable to be placed near windows or doors. This includes all fine art but might exclude certain folk pieces depending on their material. Keep in mind that pieces here will require extra anchoring to prevent the wind from displacing them.
Avoid direct sunlight
Light damage, slow but permanent, is one of the biggest threats to any art display. If your home has a lot of natural light, consider tinting your windows for more flexibility. The goal is to prevent UV rays from fading your art.
Place standing items away from foot traffic
Be sure to provide plenty of space around standing art so that it is unlikely someone will bump into it and break it. If there are young children or animals in the home, place items high up out of reach. Heavier items may need to be secured in special ways to prevent injuries, otherwise they can become a liability.
