If you’re planning a trip to a high-altitude location, you need to think about more than just the clothes you’re going to pack; you also need to be prepared to combat altitude sickness. Here are some simple tips on how to plan for high-altitude vacations.
Talk to your doctor
Not everyone can handle high altitude vacations. There are numerous acute and chronic conditions that can make a sudden change in altitude painful or even dangerous. Even if you do not have any current conditions that you are aware of, an upcoming trip to a high-altitude region is reason for scheduling your yearly checkup.
Focus on hydration
When you are dehydrated, it is harder for the body to acclimatize to a higher altitude, and airplane travel is especially dehydrating. To fight dehydration, keep extra hydrated several days before and throughout the trip. Set a target for three liters of water per day and make it easy by keeping a bottle with you at all times.
Rest up
Jet lag and inadequate sleep make it difficult for your body to adjust and more likely that high-exertion activities will bring on altitude sickness. Make sure you are well-rested before traveling and schedule a rest or low-activity day once you arrive at your destination.
Go easy on the alcohol
You can still have a drink or two while on vacation, but at higher altitudes you will feel the effects of alcohol more quickly. To ward off altitude sickness and stay healthy and aware, pace yourself when drinking and stop when you start to feel the effects.
Consume less salt
Sodium-heavy restaurant food might be one of the joys of vacation, but it is important to do what you can to limit your salt intake. Eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as much as possible, and if you are looking to enjoy rigorous activities like skiing or hiking, load up on carbs.
No matter where your travels are taking you, you need a traveler’s insurance policy to protect you. Speak with your insurance broker to learn more.
