Winter storms are pretty good at causing panic, but with these simple steps to prep for ice and snow, you can be comfortable and confident when the next blizzard hits.
Stock your house
Often times when a snowstorm is on the way, the local news will show footage of empty store shelves. Eggs, milk and bread have been bought up by residents who are hunkering down in their homes for a few days. However, it’s better to stock up on non-perishable foods with the expectation that you might lose electricity. Also, get a good supply of water, a first aid kit, batteries and flashlights.
Prep your outdoor areas for snow and ice
Before the storm hits, use rock salt or a rock salt substitute to prevent ice from sticking to surfaces where people are likely to walk. Get your shovels and snow blower ready and check that these items are in good shape. Lay down non-slip mats and use handrail guards if possible. If there are specific areas you are worried about ice sticking to—like door jambs—coat them lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
Keep your cell phone on its charger
Given the risk of losing electricity, you should keep your cell phone charging so you have a full battery when the lights go out. As added backup, have a power bank (preferably solar powered) available in case electricity is out for days.
Get ready to fight boredom
In a severe storm, everyone should stay indoors unless there is an emergency. This means you should be ready to fight boredom. Plan for both having and not having electricity. Line up some movies, and get the board games out of the closet. If you have young children, come up with simple indoor activities to them occupied.
