The end of the holiday season is official the day you pack up and put away your decorations. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed by the task ahead or just looking for some new ideas, here are our tips for storing your holiday decorations.
Toss or repair
It is rare to get through the holiday season without something breaking. From burnt-out bulbs to broken figurines, it’s time to decide whether to toss or repair your broken items. This will make next year’s decorating more fun and less work; and allow you to take advantage of steep discounts and seasonal clearance sales in early January.
Come up with an organizational system
Many people store their holiday decorations by purchasing the largest bins they can find and filling them to the brim.
Instead, divide your decorations based on where they go in the home and then give each section its own bin. For more delicate items, use smaller containers to keep them separate from everything else and pad them well.
Put wrapping paper scraps to work
If you have any leftover rolls or scrap pieces of wrapping paper, don’t toss them or store them. Rather, use them to protect your more delicate pieces and to provide cushion for items such as wreathes and Christmas trees. This helps you take care of two issues at once while also cutting down on waste.
Keep them out of the way
Since you only need these decorations once a year, you want to store them somewhere out of the way. If you store them at home, place them at the back of your storage area so you are not moving them out of the way to get to the items you need on a more frequent basis. If you store them in a storage unit, consider installing shelving and placing your holiday decorations at the top.
