The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to bust out the decorations. Unfortunately, problems can arise, so check out these safety tips before you deck the halls!
Be careful where you place real Christmas trees
Some people swear by artificial trees due to their cleanliness and reusability. On the other hand, some prefer the real thing, insisting that nothing can replicate the look or smell of a living pine tree. However, real trees carry more fire risks. If you choose a natural tree over an artificial one, place it well away from fireplaces, heaters and electrical outlets, and never leave lights on unattended. To be extra safe, purchase a fire extinguisher and keep it nearby for easy access.
Rely on teamwork for difficult decorations
Changing out the tablecloth and adorning couches with seasonal throw pillows can be done alone. If you’re stringing lights and other decorations above easy reach, try to work with at least one other person. If ladders will be used, one person should stand supporting the base while the other person climbs.
Take caution with cords and lights
Examine lights and extension cords prior to use. Look for spots where the wires are frayed, sockets are broken or loose connections are present. If you see any damage, toss the lights and wires and get new ones. Carefully hang lights and secure cords to prevent damaging them, and use hooks for hanging rather than nails. Turn lights off each night before going to bed or put them on a timer.
Know your plants
Plants can be poisonous when ingested. Although a Christmas classic, the poinsettia is poisonous to both humans and pets. If you choose to decorate with plants, research them before bringing them home. If you do choose poisonous plants, place them out of reach of children and pets.
