Are you feeling unhappy with your current insurance provider? Even if they were initially the right company when you took out your policy, your needs might’ve changed.
Here are some tips for making the switch to a provider that works better for you.
Talk to your current provider
Are your premiums too high or have you been unhappy with your current provider’s customer service? Whatever reason you have for wanting to switch insurance providers, call them first and explain the situation. In some cases, this will motivate them to work with your changing needs, allowing you to skip the hassle of making the switch.
Do your research
If you decide that you truly are done with your current provider, you should research the kind of company you want to work with next. Look at the fine print on various policies and comb through customer reviews.
Make sure there are no penalties
When you select an insurance provider, your contract may state that you have to pay certain penalties for canceling coverage before your contract period ends. If poor service is the problem, these fees could be worth it. However, if you are switching to save money, it may end up costing you more than just staying where you are for a little while longer.
Pay attention to start dates
Once you select your new provider, take careful note of when the coverage goes into effect—it may be 30, 60 or even 90 days after you begin payment. You do not want the old policy to be cancelled until you have coverage through the new one. If you are locked in with your current provider until a certain date, you can arrange it so that the new policy does not begin until you are finished paying on the old one.
Cancel the old policy on time
You will likely need to give your provider notice that you are canceling your current policy. Request coverage to end the same day new coverage begins to prevent any gaps in your insurance. Keep in mind that canceling your policy should be done in writing, not over the phone, as this ensures you have proof if needed.
