Most trick-or-treating safety tips focus on children, but what about homeowners handing out candy? Below are some tips you can use to keep yourself safe this Halloween.
Secure your pets
Your pets might not be as keen on Halloween as you are. Pets can be deeply stressed by the frequent bell ringing and knocking, and it’s easier for them to flee with the door opening so often. Even if pets do well with trick-or-treaters, your visitors may not be animal lovers, which risks upset and injury should they run away.
Ensure walkways, doorsteps, and porches are well lit
You can be held liable for injuries that occur on your property. The first step in preventing injuries from occurring is good lighting. Take time to check that all your lights are working and purchase cheap solar lights for extra illumination.
Remove trip hazards
Even if the path to your door is well lit, you should remove any possible trip hazards. In fact, it is recommended that you do this even outside of the path just in case some trick-or-treaters decide to take a shortcut through your yard. Put toys away, sweep debris and fix any uneven ground in your yard, sidewalk or driveway.
Skip the flames
Candles are basic to Halloween decorations and jack-o-lanterns, but they’re also a major fire hazard and someone could end up burned. Instead, purchase LED candles that mimic the effects of a real flame without the risk.
Give some warning
If you love to play up the scares, don’t forget to give visitors some warning. Guests may not so suspecting of a “trick”, and could be frightened by a terrifying costume or special effects. Scares may be the goal, but those who are caught unaware could end up fleeing, injuring themselves and others.
No more homemade treats
Yes, we know that most kids would much prefer a brownie to some of the candies your neighbors are handing out. But with so many food allergies and the possibility of contaminated ingredients, there is a lot at risk for you. Instead, stick to store-bought items that are clearly labeled with allergen risks.
