Make sure you are never stranded on the water, or faced with costly repair bills, by following these simple boat maintenance tips.
Get an annual service
Boat manufacturers typically recommend having your boat serviced by a specialist once a year, even if you don’t use it much. This will ensure that the vital components of the vessel, like the water pump, get checked and are in full working order.
Check the battery
Battery failure is one of the most common reasons needing assistance while out on the water. Make sure to check and charge your battery regularly. The battery should always be secured with brackets in a ventilated container. Also make sure the terminals are clean and well greased.
Check all electrical systems
Electrical systems on boats can fail due to corrosion. You should inspect electrical components frequently and make sure they are kept clean and free from corrosion. Spray electrical connectors, terminals, and other parts with a corrosion-retarding agent, and make sure to keep all electrical fittings dry.
Check the propeller
If your propeller comes into contact with sand or rocks, it can fail. It’s a good idea to carry an extra propeller just in case this happens.
Snagged fishing line can wrap around the propeller shaft and destroy the gearbox seals, letting water in. If there’s water in the gearbox, it eventually will fail. Remove the propeller regularly to check for fishing line.
Clean regularly
Cleaning your boat after use will prevent the buildup of corrosive elements. You should use fresh water and an environmentally-friendly cleaning product. If you leave your boat outside for a long time, always be sure to use a cover. This will keep the paint looking fresh and cut down on corrosion caused by the elements.
Train yourself
There are many online resources and training courses to help you with boat maintenance. You should start by reading the owner’s manual and getting familiar with all aspects of your vessel.
