If you’re in an accident and have to file an insurance claim, it can be a stressful and confusing process. While most of us have heard horror stories navigating the insurance claim process, it can actually go pretty smoothly.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that your experience goes well.
File your claim right away
In the case of something like a car accident, you want to make sure the specific details are fresh in your head. As soon as you’re able to, you’ll want to call your insurance agent or company to file a claim.
In something like a simple auto liability claim where you are not at fault, you’ll want to file a claim with the other driver’s insurance. Their company should be the one paying, and your insurance company most likely won’t automatically file the claim on your behalf if the other driver is at fault.
Depending on the complexity and type of claim, you may just give details about your claim to the person you initially call. If it is for something like a slip and fall or an auto accident where liability may be shared, most companies will assign your claim to a specialized adjuster. That person will call you, usually within 24 hours, and get a more detailed account of what happened. They also will contact the other parties involved, including any witnesses.
Obtain all the details you can
You’ll want to get all the details you can from the other driver. Some people just write down a license plate, but that isn’t enough. For one, it can delay the claim because your insurance company will need to run a report to obtain the other driver’s insurance information. Also, the contact information tied to the license plate may not be current. Make sure to copy the information on their insurance card, and better yet, get a phone number.
Mitigate your damages
If your bumper is hanging off, you shouldn’t drive the vehicle, as it could cause more damage. If you fail to mitigate your damages in instances like these, the insurance company is not going to pay for the additional damage caused by your failure to limit your losses.
Use common sense
It can be easy to lose your cool when there is an accident. It is important to remain calm and use your common sense. Think about the information your insurance company will need, follow these tips, and you’ll have a much easier time with your claim.
