Cold weather is on its way, and for some, that means it’s time to head to the tropics. For others, that means embracing the season and going where the snow is.
If you fall into the latter category, here are some excellent cold weather destinations to consider in 2018.
Quebec City, Canada
While Montreal tends to get the most attention, Quebec City should not be passed up. The entire city looks like the front of a Christmas card when the snow falls. The cobblestone streets are lovely, and the architecture transports you back in time. If you are feeling adventurous, book a stay at Hôtel de Glace where your lodgings are made from snow and glass.
Munich, Germany
Are you someone who can never decorate enough for Christmas? Then Munich, Germany is your ultimate travel destination. Renowned for its Christmas markets, you can easily travel from one shop to another and pick up unique items that big box stores back home just don’t compare. In addition to the shopping opportunities, there is also a thriving food scene to indulge in.
Sugarbush, Vermont
Looking to keep things a bit closer to home? Then consider Sugarbush, Vermont. Ideal for a long weekend, you can head there to take advantage of almost 500 acres of skiable terrain. There are also various tours to partake in and shopping — be sure to pick up some maple syrup! There are also numerous food and drink options to head to at night in Mad River Valley.
Nagano, Japan
This town is best known for having hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics, making it a great destination for winter sports. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, there are winter festivals and interesting architecture to enjoy.
Do not skip a visit to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park where you can see macaques relaxing in the natural hot springs.
Fairbanks, Alaska
You do not need to travel outside of the United States to enjoy some serious winter weather. Fairbanks, Alaska often sees its first snowfall by September. Here, you can enjoy winter sports and take in the Northern Lights while still enjoying the convenience of a larger town. If you want to venture into the wilderness, there are plenty of professionally guided tours available.
