When you purchase a major appliance, you want it to be fit for the long haul. How long can you expect to keep them running before you have to upgrade to a new model?
Expected lifespan by appliance type
Different appliances may last longer or die sooner. Here are the numbers by appliance type.
● Gas range: 15 years
● Electric range: 13 years
● Range hood: 14 years
● Dryer: 13 years
● Refrigerators: 13 years
● Garbage disposal: 12 years
● Freezer: 11 years
● Washing machine: 10 years
● Microwave: 9 years
● Dishwasher: 9 years
● Dehumidifier: 8 years
● Compactor: 6 years
Fifteen years
Many appliances will last somewhere between 10 and 20 years, with 15 years as the average. This will vary depending on the appliance, as well as the make and model of the machine. Where it is in the home and how well it is maintained are also factors.
Is it time to replace?
If you purchased an older home, you might not be sure of the age of the appliances that were included. Check the paperwork that you signed upon purchase; the ages of major appliances could be listed there. If not, check the labels on the appliances. If a date is not there, you can look up the serial number. In general, appliances 20 years old should be replaced.
Regular maintenance
To keep your appliances lasting you need to have them properly maintained. For basic maintenance, look into local repair companies and see how much they would charge to put you on a regular maintenance schedule. For many appliances, this would be just once a year, but systems like the HVAC would be seasonal. While this does mean paying regularly for service, it is cheaper than repair or replacement.
