Ready or not, summer is coming to a close. With school back in session, the backyard will probably get less use, making it the perfect time to work on your end-of-summer outdoor checklist.
We suggest completing the following:
Check on the health of your plants
Are there some plants in your yard that are looking less than their best? It is a good idea to take note of which plants thrived and which failed so you can make a gardening plan for next year.
Winterize playground equipment
This is especially important if you have any playground equipment that is made from wood. Fall and winter weather can be harsh, and without the right protection, wood can dry and split. Look into winterizing equipment, as well as taking other protective measures.
Keep up with watering and mowing
It might be tempting to let this maintenance fall to the wayside, but you should keep cutting your grass until it is no longer growing. Continue your regular watering schedule until the first frost hits, at which time you can put the hose away until spring.
Gather up the outdoor gear
If you have a shed for gardening supplies, outdoor toys and other items, now is the time to clean and organize it. Take the time to toss out worn and broken items and come up with an organization system that will make things easier next year.
Get ready to close ponds and other water features
This chore can wait a few weeks longer, but don’t forget to clean and cover all water features. If possible, empty them fully.
Close the pool
There is no activity that signals the end of summer quite like closing the pool. To do this, you will need to adjust total alkalinity and other water balance elements. It is recommended to use a chlorine extender and a shock treatment as well. Then, you can partially drain and cover your pool.
