Tips for puppy-proofing your home

Some families just aren’t complete without that special furry friend! If you’re bringing home a new puppy, the chances of a seamless transition are slim. However, puppy-proofing your home can help make things easier.

Why puppy-proofing is important

Puppy-proofing accomplishes several things. First of all, it keeps the young pup safe; there are many hazards for them in the average home. Second of all, it lessens the chance of damage to the home (homeowners’ insurance doesn’t exactly cover damage by puppy). And finally, it keeps a good relationship between you and your dog, setting you up for years of a happy companionship.

The basics of puppy-proofing your home

  • Keep your home clean and organized. When a puppy destroys something, it’s usually because it was left in the open. Get everyone in the home on board with tidying up throughout the day to keep the paws off valuables or hazardous items.
  • Use a crate. Crate training your puppy reduces accidents, helps them feel secure and gives you peace of mind when out of the house and when you go to sleep.
  • Check your greenery. Puppies will chew on anything, especially plants. However, some plants are toxic to dogs. Make sure to watch your puppy while they’re outside and remove or relocate harmful houseplants.
  • Secure your cabinets. This is a familiar one for parents. Turns out, both puppies and toddlers have a habit of trying to get into places where dangerous items might be stored. Make sure the cabinets are fastened so your puppy doesn’t get hold of things like medicines or cleaning agents.
  • Invest in a dog-proof trashcan. Most puppies are trash diggers. Getting a dog-proof trashcan, which is slightly more costly than the average bin, is well worth it. You’ll prevent both the mess and potential health risks with this purchase.
  • Protect electrical wires. If possible, place them out of the puppy’s reach. If you can’t, get special protectors to wrap around them. Without protectors, puppies can chew through wires and even hurt themselves.

The puppy phase can be a major headache without the right approach. Set the stage for a long, happy companionship by puppy-proofing your home.
