Summer is here, school is out and it is the perfect time to travel. In fact, with many exchange rates in favor of the dollar, international travel is ideal.
But how can you know if distant and unfamiliar travel destinations are safe?
Start by checking travel advisories
The Department of State issues travel advisories for any location they believe is more likely than most to pose a danger to American citizens.
For example, the Department of State currently has multiple travel advisories in effect for Mexico, but none that are serious for the country as a whole. The state of Colima is listed as a place not to travel to but most states are listed as safe if caution is exercised.
Join Facebook groups for the area
Department of State travel advisories are quite broad, covering entire states when only a city or two are the reason for the advisory. After looking at advisories, look into groups for the area where you can get a better feel for the safety of a given city and get some good ideas on things to do and see there. Pay attention to areas and neighborhoods locals tend to avoid.
Find expat blogs and forums
People native to an area might provide the best restaurant recommendations, but they will not know what it is like to experience their city as a foreigner. Seek out expat blogs and forums to get vital tips and tricks from foreigners living in a city or area. Expats will be aware of what might surprise you and of any unique challenges foreigners may face.
Follow Facebook news groups for the city
A city rarely makes national or international news for a good reason, leaving news junkies with a skewed view of many international destinations. Instead, go to where the locals get their news to learn about regional events.
