Today’s automobiles are some of the most technically-advanced objects in our lives. Some of this technology has been developed to improve safety.
Here are some auto safety features you may not know about.
Voice control
Most cars today are Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to control simple functions (such as music) with your voice. You may be able to control your car’s climate, navigation, and even the windshield wipers with your voice. This helps to keep your mind focused on the road and your hands on the wheel.
Familiarize yourself with new voice controls and hands-free systems in your driveway instead of the open road. Pairing your Bluetooth isn’t meant to be done while driving down the highway.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Electronic Stability Control checks if the direction of your car corresponds to the position your steering wheel. If a slide is detected, it can apply the brakes appropriately and reduce the torque of the engine in order to straighten the vehicle. This safety feature was first rolled out in luxury vehicles in the mid-1990s, and as of 2012, all vehicles are required to have ESC.
Advanced airbags
Most models that are newer than 15 years old have airbags. Today even the least expensive new cars include front and side airbags.
The newest airbag innovations include inflatable seat belts (Ford) and a pedestrian airbag (Volvo) that will pop up over the windshield if you hit someone.
These new technologies not only help keep you safer on the road, they may also save you money on your auto insurance premiums. Most auto insurance companies offer a discount for more advanced auto safety features such as ESC, airbags, and anti-lock brakes.
