Insurance can help you recover from a burglary, but everyone would agree it’s better to avoid one in the first place.
Take these simple steps to deter burglars from choosing your home as a target.
1. Lock your doors
It may sound obvious, but most burglaries happen without the use of force. Securely lock the front and back doors as well as any windows on the ground floor. The more time burglars have to spend trying to break into your home, the greater their chances of getting caught.
2. Install or upgrade your home security system
Homes without security systems are three times more likely to be burglarized than those with security systems. An alarm won’t stop every burglar, but at the very least it will make them think twice about whether your home is worth the added risk. You might even qualify for discounts on your homeowners insurance premiums.
3. Don’t leave empty boxes at the curb
Empty electronics packaging practically screams, “I just got a new TV!” The less would-be thieves know about what’s inside your home, the less of a target it’ll be.
4. Maintain your landscaping
An unkempt lawn could signal to burglars that you’re not home very much, and hedges near windows give them a place to hide while they find a way inside.
5. Save the vacation updates for after your return
Broadcasting the fact that you’ll be out of town for a week on social media is never a good idea unless you’ve completely locked down your accounts. It’s a cinch for a burglar who sees your updates to find your address online.
6. Install smart home technology
Whether tied into your home security system or not, smart home technology gives you extra control and peace of mind. Can’t remember if you locked the back door? Double check on your smartphone in seconds. You can also automate thermostats, lights and more to make it seem like someone’s home even if you’re away.
7. Park in the garage
If you have a garage, parking in it all the time makes it harder for burglars to determine when you’re away or what your schedule is like.
8. Get a dog
Even a small- or medium-sized dog that goes nuts whenever it sees people in your yard will deter burglars. Its size doesn’t matter when it’s behind a closed door, the noise it makes will be enough to drive away all but the most determined thieves.
