5 things you may not know about auto insurance

September 13, 2017 by John B. Wright Insurance Leave a Comment

Not everything you hear about auto insurance is correct. Here are 5 auto insurance facts and myths.

1. Items in your car may not be covered

Never presume your auto policy covers the contents of your vehicle. In fact, most standard policies don’t.

If someone breaks into your car and steals your possessions you may only be able to submit a claim for the damage done to your vehicle during the robbery. Check your homeowners or renters insurance for possible coverage of your possessions.

Non-stock parts may also not be covered. If you’ve invested a lot of money into upgrades, you’ll want to consider adding a custom parts and equipment endorsement.

2. Credit history affects your insurance rates

While a poor or non-existent credit history will not prevent you from purchasing coverage, it can lead to higher premiums.

Not all insurers consider your credit score when determining your premium, however, so if yours is less than perfect, consider asking your insurance agent about providers that do not run a credit check when quoting a policy.

3. Not all coverage includes your pet

For many, the family dog is just that: family. But don’t presume that all insurance companies see it that way.

If you travel often with your pet in the car, ask when your policy is written whether their vet bills will be covered in the event of an accident.

4. Red cars cost more to insure

Who knows where this old myth got started but it’s simply not true. Make, model, age, engine size and safety record are the vehicle-specific criteria that go into calculating your premium.

5. The cheapest insurance upgrades are the most useful

It’s so easy to get caught up in saving money that you just put your “no” face on and say “no thank you” to every additional coverage your agent tries to offer you.

But some of this stuff is not really an upsell, it’s useful coverage at rock bottom prices.

Here are a few affordable upgrades every driver should consider adding to their policy:

  • Gap coverage
  • Roadside assistance and towing
  • Rental reimbursement
  • Uninsured motorist coverage
